For the second year CAM’s participating in "Smithsonian" Magazine’s 8th Annual Museum Day Live! Come enjoy our new exhibits; family art activities; Civil War trail; and sculpture park. The Museum School will host a reception from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm with a display of artwork by students who participated in Master Classes and Summer Camp. Also from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm Raku Firing at the Clay Studio, and at 3:00 pm a lecture by Rwandan artist Innocent Nkurunziza, held in collaboration with Campus Life Arts and Programs, UNCW.

The Waddell/Russell duo jazz concert will blend familiar standards with intriguing originals in an inviting and engaging presentation.

Mike Waddell - Whether it’s Mozart, Monk, Brahms or Bird, Waddell has performed on the woodwinds in a host of great venues, including the Hollywood Bowl and Kennedy Center. A twice recipient of the North Carolina Jazz Composer’s Fellowship, he produced the CDs "Not From Concentrate, Defining Moments", and most recently "Home Game" (with Bob Russell). In addition to concerts with Mr. Russell, Mike has performed and/or recorded with the Dukes of Dixieland, Ed Paolantonio, Scott Sawyer, the NC Jazz Festival, the American Dance Festival, the Wilmington and Fairbanks Symphony Orchestras, as well as the UNCW Wind Symphony and Jazz Band. In film, he performed solo clarinet on "Déjà Vu", coached clarinetists for the feature film "Bolden" and played on a soundtrack of "One Tree Hill". He teaches at UNCW.

Bob Russell - Virtuoso guitarist Bob Russell not only excels as a jazz player but as a composer, teacher and multi-instrumentalist. He is adept in guitar settings from acoustic to electric and musical styles from rock and popular to jazz. Bob was a mainstay on the Atlanta scene before returning to his native Wilmington and joining the faculty at UNCW. Russell has worked with the Paul Winter Consort, Henry Mancini, George Crumb, the Atlanta Ballet, Atlanta Pops Orchestra, Atlanta Braves Baseball, and numerous others. His CD releases include "Watch This!, If You Never", and most recently, "Bob Russell’s Ego Trip" and "Home Game" (with Mike Waddell), both 2010 releases.

The 3rd season of the popular series offers a mixture of new and familiar musicians performing a range of jazz genres for your listening pleasure. JAZZ @ THE CAM is a seven concert series September 2012 - April 2013 by CAM and the Cape Fear Jazz Society (www.capefearjazz.org).

Ray Remembered

For Banned Books Week, an evening honoring Ray Bradbury's contributions to literature, life and freedom from censorship. Bradbury’s iconic and groundbreaking works include "Fahrenheit 451", "The Martian Chronicles", "Dandelion Wine", and "Something Wicked This Way Comes". The evening includes readings, performances from "Fahrenheit 451", an reminisces from Bradbury's life and work. Performers for the evening include: Linda Lavin, Harris Yulin, John Stafford, Steve Bakunas, Jemila Ericson, Henry Bazemore, Barbara Weetman and Kendall Walker. Held in collaboration with City Stage and Old Books on Front Street.

Architecture Lecture: Phil Freelon, “Museum projects and current work”
Philip G. Freelon, FAIA, LEED® AP is the founder and president of The Freelon Group, Architects – a 65 person firm based in Durham, NC. Focusing on higher education, science & technology and museum/cultural center projects, Freelon’s firm has successfully delivered award winning building design within a collaborative and innovative studio environment. The firm has completed major museum projects in Baltimore, MD, San Francisco, CA, Greensboro and Charlotte, NC. The team of Freelon Adjaye Bond is leading the design for the Smithsonian’s new National Museum of African American History and Culture currently under construction on the National Mall in Washington, DC. Recent commissions include libraries in Washington, DC, Atlanta, GA and Chicago, IL as well as a commemorative park in Houston, TX and a museum in Jackson MS.

The Freelon Group (http://freelon.com) has received forty-five American Institute of Architects (AIA) design awards and has also received AIA North Carolina’s Outstanding Firm Award in 2001. Freelon has served as an adjunct professor at the College of Design, North Carolina State University and has been a visiting critic and lecturer at Harvard, MIT, the University of Maryland, Syracuse University, the University of Virginia, Kent State University, the University of Cincinnati, Catholic University and the University of California-Berkeley, among others. He is currently on the faculty at MIT’s School of Architecture and Planning.

Phil Freelon is one of 30 licensed architects and 31 LEED® Accredited Professionals in his firm and is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. In 2009 he received the AIA Thomas Jefferson Award for Public Architecture and in 2010 he was awarded AIA North Carolina’s Gold Medal. In 2011 he was appointed by President Barrack Obama to the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts.

A native of Philadelphia, PA., Freelon holds a Bachelor of Environmental Design (Architecture) from North Carolina State University's College of Design and a Master of Architecture from MIT. He is also a recipient the Loeb Fellowship from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design.

MUSIC: Los Cuñados de Tierra Caliente, traditiona

Los Cuñados de Tierra Caliente (The In-Laws of Tierra Caliente), celebrates traditional original music from Hispanic musicians in the New Hanover County area thanks to the efforts of Jeff Sanchez (El Gringo), Wilmington, NC. Sanchez was the station manager for the now-defunct WLGD, Wilmington’s first FM Spanish language station. In August 2010 Sanchez received a North Carolina Arts Council Folk Life grant to help fund the CD project, "Tu Mundo Ya No Es Mi Mundo"("Your World is No Longer My World") produced by Sanchez with the sounds of traditional musicians from Mexico.

“This Folk Life grant allowed New Hanover County to provide quality arts production for citizens of Hispanic descent, while also sustaining our local economy,” says Sanchez. “Perhaps this project will enable these local musicians to be able to make a living through the arts, and to maintain their cultural ties to their homelands. This also enriches the culture of southeastern North Carolina, exposing Americans to the rich cultural heritage of our neighboring country of Mexico.”
